The YLP seeks to get these young people the educational, health, mental health, and other services necessary to stay in their homes and communities and out of the juvenile justice system. The type of work the YLP does includes representation at school disciplinary hearings and special education meetings and proceedings. The YLP does not provide representation in delinquency or CHINS cases, but works closely with the public defenders and court-appointed counsel who do to determine how best to meet the youth’s needs. The Youth Law Project handles the following types of cases: Special education advocacy and representation at educational legal proceedings for children in the juvenile justice system and at risk of court involvement. Representation at long term suspension and expulsion hearings. Representation at other legal proceedings that may affect a youth's right to attend school.

Clearway High School for at-risk teenagers offers emotionally supportive, self-paced educational environment which encourages students to overcome previous academic failure and discover personal success. The academic curriculum provides competency in basic educational skills: English, mathematics, science, and social studies. A School-to-Work program helps students assess their career goals, and teaches them employability skills through job shadowing, mentorships, and career exploration opportunities. Childcare may also be available to promote school attendance for young parents.

Mayhew challenges and helps at-risk New Hampshire boys to believe in themselves, work well with others, and find their best. It is the only all-boys program in the state that combines school-year mentoring and a residential summer program for at-risk boys, tuition-free, through high school graduation.
